Venice's canal water goes crystal clear as coronavirus keeps visitors away

Ever wondered how the world would look like without humans? With human interruption down to a minimum due to measures taken in the face of the coronavirus, wildlife that has been typically kept away from busy ports in Italy, appears to have returned.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

In Venice, the usually dark, murky waterways have transformed into crystal clear water that's enough to see fish swimming below as the Covid-19 pandemic halts tourism in the city.⁣⁣⁣⁣ Swans were seen gliding along the surface that would normally be crowded with gondolas and dolphins were leaping in its harbour. ⁣

“Nature has hit the reset button” is one sentiment doing the rounds on social media at the moment. A welcome silver lining to an otherwise doom-filled scenario. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

Amid the crisis, the clear water is a small reprieve for Venice, considering in November, 2019 when the city was hit by the worst flood in 50 years, resulting in damage worth hundreds of millions of euros, according to CBS News. It's also struggling with unsustainable overtourism, the sinking of its historical buildings, and a dwindling population. Swipe through to see more. ⁣ ⁣⁣
