The history of film is full of tragic love stories. From “Casablanca”, “Ghost”, “Titanic”, to “Amour”—the list goes on. Films by Wong Kar-Wai capture the yearning and anguish of complex human emotions on a great scale through sumptuous, painterly cinematography, and “In the Mood for Love” is a great example of his skills.
Starring Tony Leung Maggie Cheung, the film tells the story of a doomed love affair set in 1960s Hong Kong. This year, the 73rd Cannes Film Festival will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the iconic film. Fans are expecting to revisit Wong's great cinema as the festival will be screening a 4K restored version of the film in its Classics section before re-releasing the version in cinemas internationally.
Since it’s first premiered on the Croisette in May 2000, the movie hailed an instant classic, earning Leung the best male actor award that year. In 2016, it was voted the second best film of the 21st century by a panel critics assembled by the BBC.
