Chanel AW20 Delivers A Touch of Edwardian

Following a recreation of the famous mirrored staircase in Coco Chanel's cloister garden at Aubazine in January, for Autumn/Winter '20 collection, Virginie Viard orchestrated a confounding lineup that stunned in its disarray, with Gigi Hadid and Kaia Gerber bidding adieu to Paris Fashion Week, slaying the runway yesterday.⁣

Under the helm of its eponymous founder and her predecessor, Karl Lagerfeld, Viard took inspiration from the turn-of-the-1980s photography of him and style icon Anna Piaggi that referenced the Edwardian revival. The designer imagined a modern dreamy world while incorporating white lace, floral details, and pastel shades into a vigorous palette of black and white with undulating benches serving as the backdrop. Models emerged from the middle—at times in pairs and triplets—one wore a light green skirt suit, the other, a sporty jacket over a lace cropped top, and wide pants. There was an army of reinterpreted Lagerfeld's cavalier boots in black with brown flaps that styled persuasively with every single outfit. ⁣

Kaia Gerber hit the runway in an off-the-shoulder black midi dress with a tight corset bodice and exaggerated poofy long sleeves—oozing a Victoriana-meets-Gothic vibe. Meanwhile, Gigi Hadid's tweed lurex coat had the look of a 17th-century frock coat with a contemporary bomber jacket style zip closure. She completed her look with a pair of decorative opaque tights.⁣
