Following a recreation of the famous mirrored staircase in Coco Chanel's cloister garden at Aubazine in January, for Autumn/Winter '20 collection, Virginie Viard orchestrated a confounding lineup that stunned in its disarray, with Gigi Hadid and Kaia Gerber bidding adieu to Paris Fashion Week, slaying the runway yesterday.
Under the helm of its eponymous founder and her predecessor, Karl Lagerfeld, Viard took inspiration from the turn-of-the-1980s photography of him and style icon Anna Piaggi that referenced the Edwardian revival. The designer imagined a modern dreamy world while incorporating white lace, floral details, and pastel shades into a vigorous palette of black and white with undulating benches serving as the backdrop. Models emerged from the middle—at times in pairs and triplets—one wore a light green skirt suit, the other, a sporty jacket over a lace cropped top, and wide pants. There was an army of reinterpreted Lagerfeld's cavalier boots in black with brown flaps that styled persuasively with every single outfit.
Kaia Gerber hit the runway in an off-the-shoulder black midi dress with a tight corset bodice and exaggerated poofy long sleeves—oozing a Victoriana-meets-Gothic vibe. Meanwhile, Gigi Hadid's tweed lurex coat had the look of a 17th-century frock coat with a contemporary bomber jacket style zip closure. She completed her look with a pair of decorative opaque tights.
